New York: Harper & Row, 1967. Hardcover. Limited edition. A fine book in blue cloth binding. A specially, limited edition, issued without a dust jacket, but with a heavy acetate jacket which is present. One of 500 copies, this being #313. With the original publisher's slipcase in very good condition with some soiling to the edges and some sunning to the spine. This is one of Wilder's last novels and it was awarded the National Book Award. Wilder bibliographers call this "a tale set in a mining town in southern Illinois about two families blasted apart by the apparent murder of one father by the other. The miraculous escape of the accused killer, John Ashley, on the eve of his execution, and his subsequent flight to freedom trigger a powerful story tracing the fates of all those whose lives are forever changed by the tragedy." Signed by the author on the limitation page.
