An encyclopedia of each of the 48 states was envisioned by the Federal Writers Project of the Works Progress Administration. Several states attempted to complete their editions, but Idaho's is the only one that was published. It was advertised as "The American Encyclopedia Series." It was spearheaded by Vardis Fisher, an energetic and prolific and best-selling author who had pushed ahead with the Idaho State Guide to insure that is was also the first one published. This remains one of the best books on Idaho history.
